With their track “In Your Soul,” The Things—a largely unknown garage-psych band from Houston, Texas—left a lasting impression on the underground scene of the late 1960s. Recorded in July 1967 at the legendary Andrus Productions Studio, which also hosted acts like the 13th Floor Elevators and Golden Dawn, the track remained unreleased for decades before being rediscovered in the 1980s through the compilation Acid Visions.
“In Your Soul” is a prime example of Texas garage psychedelia: a relentlessly martial two-chord beat, thunderous drum fills, fuzz-soaked guitars, and a dominant Farfisa organ define the raw, hypnotic sound. The vocals are emotionally charged and direct, while the lyrics are minimal—typical of the genre’s stripped-down aesthetic.
Little is known about the band's lineup, but alongside “In Your Soul,” they recorded three other tracks: “I Don’t Believe It,” “Another Girl Like You,” and “Loveless Lover.” The session was likely produced by Roy Ames, more commonly associated with R&B artists like Lightnin’ Hopkins. A commercial release never materialized, and the tapes disappeared into archival obscurity.
It wasn’t until collectors and enthusiasts—such as Andy Bradley—brought the recordings to the attention of Voxx Records that the songs were finally issued. Their inclusion on Acid Visions posthumously earned The Things cult status as authentic representatives of the raw, unfiltered Texas underground—a sound whose energy and DIY spirit continue to captivate listeners today.
