Psychedelic Jukebox: [1966] The Doppler Effect - God Is Alive In Argentina

Amid the exploding psychedelic scene of the late 1960s, a short-lived band emerged from Colorado and left behind a single track that would later become a cult favorite among garage rock enthusiasts: “God Is Alive In Argentina”, released in 1967 on the obscure label EGO Productions.

The Doppler Effect originated in Aspen, Colorado, and performed at local venues, including the legendary The Exodus club in Denver. Their music reflects the spirit of the times: fuzzy guitars, swirling organ, and raw, high-energy vocals combine into a powerful psychedelic soundscape. Though the song title may sound provocative, it is more mystical than political—typical of the era’s spiritual and socially conscious experimentation.

The band’s full lineup remains somewhat unclear, but names like Clark Garman (also credited as Clark Wayne), Brooks Hunnicutt, Tony Oakland, Robert Allen McDonald, and possibly Lance LeConn as lead vocalist have been mentioned. Some members later relocated to California, after which the band seemingly dissolved.

Originally released as a 7″ vinyl single with the B-side “Memphis Woman,” the song was reissued in 1985 on the Highs in the Mid Sixties: Colorado compilation and later featured on other collections like Psychedelic States – Colorado in the 60s. These re-releases brought the track to a new audience and established it as one of the most striking rediscoveries of late ’60s American underground psychedelia.

Today, this single song stands as a testament to the countless small bands of the era that flickered briefly and vanished—but not without leaving a sonic footprint behind.
